Getting the Oxford County list
Maine municipalities, not counties, hold tax-acquired property and its sale proceeds. Ask the tax collector, treasurer or town manager of the town where the property lies in Oxford County (largest: Rumford, Paris, Norway) under the Freedom of Access Act (1 M.R.S. 408-A) for tax-acquired property sold and excess proceeds held; payment notices are recorded at the Oxford County Registry of Deeds. For land in the Unorganized Territory, ask Maine Revenue Services (Property Tax Division), which handles tax-acquired land there. Since LD 2003 (36 M.R.S. 943-C, 2024), a town that sells tax-acquired property must pay the former owner the excess sale proceeds after subtracting the taxes, interest, costs and sale expenses; unclaimed money goes to the Maine State Treasurer's unclaimed property program.
